Welcome!
My name is Jonah Cooley, and I am proud to serve as the Executive Committeeman and Secretary of the Abbeville County Democratic Party.
As your Executive Committeeman, I represent Abbeville County on the South Carolina Democratic Party Executive Committee alongside Remle’ Beard-Johnson. Think of this committee as being the statewide equivalent of the Democratic National Committee.
As your Secretary, I am responsible for maintaining accurate records for all official Party business. I am also responsible for creating and maintaining the Party’s official website.
I also currently have the honor of serving as the President of the Lander University College Democrats, an organization that I restarted with a few friends in the fall of 2025. I currently study political science and history at Lander.
I grew up in Abbeville, having moved to this city from McCormick at the age of five. I always joke that my family has been in South Carolina longer than the Appalachian Mountains. I grew up in an intense political climate shaped by a pandemic, an insurrection, and a despot in the White House. Having grown up in the tenth poorest state in the country, a state with the second highest rate of medical debt in the country, a state consistently ranking in the bottom ten for education, I knew that someone had to stand up for the community that I grew up in. I knew that in the wealthiest nation on Earth, no one should have to go hungry, everyone should have the right to a well-paying job, and no one should go into debt paying for housing, healthcare, or education.
I believe that the Republicans who have been governing our state for my entire life have failed my fellow South Carolinians. I believe in the South Carolina that once voted more for Franklin Roosevelt than any other state in the Union. I believe that in order to strengthen the Democratic Party in South Carolina, we have to be more proactive in communicating why our policies are better for our communities.
As a Democrat in South Carolina, I am often asked why I don’t just leave. There is a simple reason: I love my home, and when you love something, you fight for it.
As your Executive Committeeman, I am proud to fight alongside you as we elect more Democrats to roll up their sleeves and deliver for the people of Abbeville County.
